MOSCOW – A decision to resume flights to Cairo is near, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich told reporters on Saturday.

“I won’t name the timeframe (of resumption of air travel between Moscow and Cairo), but I believe, the decision on Cairo is near,” Dvorkovich said.

It was reported earlier that the resumption of flights between Russia and Egypt will begin with opening of regular flights between Moscow and Cairo. The Russian passengers will be served in the second terminal of Cairo airport which was equipped with new security systems. The Russian Transport Ministry has forwarded proposals to the government on resuming regular flights to Cairo, Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said on January 21.

Resumption of charter fights to the Egyptian resort cities of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada will happen later, the Russian Transport Ministry said earlier, adding that this “is a matter of not too distant future.”

Simultaneously, Russia and Egypt are planning to sign an intergovernmental agreement in ensuring security of civil aviation. Its further details were not disclosed. The agreement may be signed during a visit of Egyptian Civilian Aviation Minister Sharif Fathi to Russia in early February, Sokolov said.
