Russia’s foreign ministry says that “several dozen” Russian and former USSR citizens were wounded in a US air strike in Syria, the first official indication that a sizeable contingent of Russian mercenaries may have clashed with the US-led coalition.

The ministry said in a statement on Feb.20 that the Russians were “given assistance returning to Russia where, as far as we know, they are undergoing rounds of treatment in various medical facilities.”
