This summer, mass protests and police brutality captured international attention in the lead up to the Moscow City Duma elections. Nevertheless, the protests persisted, with demonstrations (sanctioned or otherwise) taking place nearly every weekend up until the election on Sept. 8. Meanwhile, the most important crackdown took place off the streets and away from the cameras – in the city’s courtrooms.
