The Kremlin does not expect a breakthrough in the settlement process in eastern Ukraine from the visit of U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland to Moscow, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

“There can be no breakthroughs [in the settlement of the situation in eastern Ukraine]. This is a routine work conducted at the level of experts. It is not planned to make any breakthroughs or something else,” he said on Wednesday, answering a question as to whether tangible results in the Donbas settlement process can be achieved following Nuland’s visit to Moscow.

The United States is not a party to the ‘Normandy format’, Peskov said.

“At the same time, this information exchange mechanism was started up at the level of experts for delivering first-hand information pertaining to various aspects of the Ukrainian settlement process to the U.S. side,” the presidential press secretary said.
