MOSCOW – The temporary blocking of Google shows there are no untouchables in Russia’s legal field, Leonid Levin, head of the State Duma committee on information policy, information technologies and communications, said.

“The situation around the temporary blocking of Google is not down to a hackers’ provocation, a Roskomnadzor [Russian communications watchdog) error or illegal placement of the company’s website on the Single register of prohibited information. It shows that there are no untouchables in the Russian legal field and even major Internet-players must not abuse their positions by interacting with websites engaged in illegal activities,” Levin told journalists on Thursday, commenting on the situation around temporary blocking of the Google website.

“The resonance caused by this event shows once again how sensitive this topic is for citizens and the media,” Levin said.

“This should serve as a caution for Internet-companies and force them to select their partners more responsibly in future,” Levin said.

“What happened is an illustrious example proving the timeliness of Roskomnadzor chief Alexander Zharov’s proposal for the State Duma committee on information policy, information technologies and communications to set up a permanent working group to deal with issues concerning application of the law in the sphere of countering illegal content, ,” the head of the Duma committee said.
