You're reading: Moldova’s relations with Russia on precipice – President Dodon

Russian-Moldovan relations are on a precipice following the expulsion of Russian diplomats from Moldova, Moldovan President Igor Dodon said.

“Our bilateral relations have never been at a precipice like this in the 25-year history of bilateral relations between Moldova and Russia. That’s what the Moldovan government’s and the parliamentary majority’s irresponsible decisions and actions taken for the benefit of the Western handlers rather than their own people have led to,” Dodon said on Facebook on May 31, commenting in his post dubbed ‘A symmetrical response’ on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s decision on the expulsion of five Moldovan diplomats.

Dodon said he will hold meetings with the Russian leadership at various levels in the next few days.

“I hope Russia won’t take other retaliatory measures of an economic and social nature. But it depends on Chisinau in the first place. If the government will continue to increase tensions in Moldovan-Russian relations and incite breakup with our main strategic partner, the Russian Federation, we, the people of the Republic of Moldova, will have our say,” Dodon said.

As reported, five diplomats of the Russian Embassy in Moldova were declared personae non gratae on May 29. On May 31, the Russian Foreign Ministry decided on a symmetrical response, the expulsion of five Moldovan diplomats from Russia.
