MOSCOW – The Kremlin plans to sit out the centenary of the Russian Revolution. Never mind that the upheavals of 1917 transformed the country and the world, abruptly ending the long rule of the czars, ushering in the Communist era and spawning an ideological confrontation with the West that still resonates.

Several dozen of extras re-enact bolshevik fighters overthrowing the Provisional Government of Alexander Kerensky in the courtyard of the Winter Palace in Petrograd Nov. 7, 1917, in the movie "October" shot in 1927 by Soviet film director Sergey Eisenstein. The Bolshevik takeover began when armed squads of revolutionaries occupied railway stations, post offices and banks, as well as the cruiser Aurora which flew the red flag and was anchored in the river Neva opposite the Winter Palace.
