You're reading: Police free Navalny after charging him with administrative offense

Opposition politician Alexei Navalny has been charged with an administrative offense and released from a police department, Anti-Corruption Foundation lawyer Ivan Zhdanov told Interfax on February 22.

“They handed a report to Navalny and let him go. It’s unclear right now what’s up with [Leonid] Volkov, and there is no communication with him,” he said.

Earlier reports said Leonid Volkov, the head of Navalny’s headquarters, had been detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport.

The date and venue of the hearing of the administrative case against Navalny are not yet known, Zhdanov said.

Police detained Navalny while he was leaving a dentist’s office and brought him to the Yakimanka police department, where they handed him an administrative offense report on “repeated violation of procedures regulating the organization of a demonstration,” Zhdanov said.
