RFE/RL: Dig near Stalin-era mass grave looks to some like Kremlin dirty work

(FILE) A picture taken in October 2003 shows a Russian pathfinder digging at the grave site in Kaluga region. The remains of nearly 36 Russian soldiers who fought in World War II, along with their boots, wool socks, cigarette lighters and military decorations, were discovered not far from the town of Kaluga. Russians will celebrate Victory Day 09 May 2004.

Deep in the forests of Karelia in northwestern Russia, digging is under way to find the graves of Red Army soldiers from the World War II era that may have been executed while prisoners of war by their Finnish captors.

At least that is how the Russian Military-Historical Society (RVIO), which is carrying out the excavation work, describes the project.
