MOSCOW – Russian Railways Group (RZD) is considering entering the Bulgarian infrastructure project market, but is worried about the EU’s position on the matter.

“There are a number of projects planned in Bulgaria,” the CEO of RZD subsidiary LLC RZD International, Sergei Pavlov, told journalists. RZD International’s interest in the country is confirmed on the company’s website as well. Under the section showing the geography of the company’s projects, Bulgaria is included as a prospective project.

“But we are now holding negotiations in general on cooperating with the European Union, and the situation right now with EU countries is ‘getting better and better’ on their side. And they are doing everything in order for us to work as little as possible with their sanction measures,” he said.

He did not reveal what kind of specific projects interest Russian Railways in Bulgaria. “What’s the sense of announcing that which Brussels is fighting against,” Pavlov said, adding that it referred to infrastructure projects.
