The Russian government has approved the data storage rules for telecommunications operators concerning text messages and internet voice traffic of users, requiring them to begin storing the information for 30 days from October 1, 2018.

“A communications operator providing telematic communications services and/or data transmission communication services, with the exception of data transmission communication services for the purpose of voice information transmission, ensures the storage of telecommunication messages in zero volume from July 1, 2018 and from October 1, 2018 – storage in full of telecommunication messages […] sent and received by users of the said operator for 30 days preceding the date the information storage capacity entered service,” according to the resolution.

Under the resolution, the Communications and Mass Media Ministry and the Federal Security Service (FSB) are to present proposals on adjusting the data storage parameters up until December 2022.
