Britain’s relations with Moscow are at their lowest point since the dissolution of the Soviet Union almost 30 years ago, and possibly worse than at any time since Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in 1985. The Russian annexation of Crimea from its neighbor Ukraine in 2014 prompted sanctions against key members and supporters of the Putin regime. The Kremlin has been implicated in social media campaigns and cybercrime designed to influence elections in foreign states. The Skripal poisonings in Salisbury led to the expulsion of Russian diplomats in London and across the West, a measure reciprocated by Moscow. In effect, a new Cold War is well underway.
