An unidentified man armed with a knife injured eight people in downtown Surgut on Saturday, the Russian Investigative Committee’s investigative department for the Khanty-Mansi autonomous district said.

“An unidentified man armed with a knife, moving along the city’s main streets, committed an attack on passersby, inflicting knife injuries on eight citizens, in the city of Surgut approximately at 11:20 a.m. on August 19. All affected persons were hospitalized with injuries of varying degrees of severity,” it said.

“According to citizens’ reports, policemen from the patrol and inspection service had immediately arrived on the scene and used weapons in order to suppress illegal actions of the attacker, who was eliminated as a result of it,” it said.

The Russian Investigative Committee’s department for the Khanty-Mansi autonomous district initiated on the grounds of the incident a criminal case for a crime specified under the Russian Criminal Code’s articles on an attempted homicide.

Investigators and forensic experts of the regional department of the Russian Investigative Committee are currently working on the scene. Circumstances and motives of the crime are being established, the attacker is being identified.

The government of the Khanty-Mansi autonomous district is providing assistance to injured persons in Surgut. Two injured persons are in grave condition, while five in moderate one, Vladislav Nigmatulin, the deputy head of the region’s healthcare department, said.
