Soyuzmultfilm cartoon studio CEO Yuliana Slashcheva has confirmed the death of writer Eduard Uspensky.
“Eduard Uspensky’s daughter has confirmed to Soyuzmultfilm’s lawyers that her father passed away,” Slashcheva told Interfax.
An informed source told Interfax earlier that Uspensky, 80, died in his home in Moscow.
Uspensky was a Soviet and Russian writer, author of children’s books, and television anchor. He was born in Yegoryevsk on December 22, 1937, graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute with a degree in engineering, and earned his living as a cartoon screenwriter.
He created many popular characters, such as Crocodile Gena and Cheburashka, Matroskin the Cat, Uncle Fyodor, Pechkin the Postman, Sharik the Dog, and the Kolobki Brothers.
In all, Uspensky wrote scripts for almost 60 cartoons.
