Norwegian grandmaster Magnus Carlsen defended his title as the best chess player in the world, defeating Russian challenger Sergey Karjakin in tie-breakers on Nov. 30. This is Carlsen’s third consecutive championship.

Carlsen will receive 60 percent of the $1.1 million (1.03 million euros) prize for the win, with the second-place challenger taking the other 40 percent of the pot.
