You're reading: Kalinina to debut in U.S. Open tennis tournament

Twenty-one year-old Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina will play in her first United States Open Tennis Championships – one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s tennis. She will debut in the main women’s singles draw at the U.S. Grand Slam tournament.

On August 24, the Ukrainian defeated Australia’s Jaimee Fourlis in the third qualifying match – 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. The match lasted 127 minutes.

Kalinina will be competing in New York from Aug. 27 to Sept. 9.

Kalinina ranks 136th in the world.

The Ukrainian tennis player won all three qualifying matches to reach the women’s main draw. Kalinina easily bested her first two rivals: she beat Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-1, 7-6) and Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova (6-3, 6-1).

The two leading Ukrainian tennis players – Elina Svitolina, ranked number seven internationally, and Lesia Tsurenko, ranked at number 35, will also be competing in the U.S. Open tournament. Additionally, five other Ukrainian tennis players will participate in the tournament.
