Fifteen-year-old Ukrainian women’s tennis star Marta Kostyuk is to play her first WTA Premier Mandatory – the most prestigious type of tournament in women’s tennis after the Grand Slams.

Kostyuk will be competing in Madrid from May 7-13.

The young Ukrainian star received a wildcard invitation from the organizers in Madrid in recognition of her recent performance in Stuttgart, Germany, at the Porsche Grand Prix, where she defeated top seed Alizé Cornet in the final qualifying round, and went out to a narrow defeat by World No. 7 Caroline Garcia in the second round.

Kostyuk is ranked 134th in the world, and rose 24 spots after the tournament in Germany.

Two other leading Ukrainian tennis players – world No. 4 Elina Svitolina and No. 38 Lesia Tsurenko, will also be competing in the Madrid Premier Mandatory.

Kostyuk has also been nominated for the WTA’s “Breakthrough of the Month.” Votes for her can be cast here:
