Ukraine and Russia will meet on Friday in Amsterdam in the UEFA futsal European championship semi-final against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions between the two countries.

The semi-final in UEFA’s showpiece five-a-side tournament will go ahead at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome indoor arena at 18:00 Kyiv time, with the state TV channel airing the game.

The winner will play either Spain or Holland on February 6. This is the first men’s competitive meeting between the nations in a UEFA tournament since 2007.

The last match in football was a Euro 2000 qualifying game in 1999, which ended 1-1. Ukraine overcame Russia 3-2 in Kyiv in the fall of 1998 in the first game. But there will be a winner tonight, with the loser playing for third place in the tournament on Sunday.

This evening’s match will be shown in downtown Kyiv on a big screen at the Gulliver entertainment and shopping complex and aired live on Ukrainian state TV.
