You're reading: Ukraine ups Olympic medal count by two with silver and bronze

Ukrainian athletes won one silver and one bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics on Aug. 5.

Ukraine now has 13 medals and is ranked 36th in the official medal count by country.

Ukrainian karateka Anzhelika Terliuga received a silver medal after losing in the finals of the women’s 55-kilogram category. The kumite karate final was won by Bulgarian Ivet Goranova 5:1.

In the semifinal, Terliuga beat Taiwanese karateka Wen Tzu-yun 4:4.

This is the first time karate appears at the Summer Olympics. Four other new sports were added to the Tokyo Olympic program –  baseball/softball, skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

Additionally, Liudmyla Luzan won a bronze medal in the women’s canoe single 200-meter category.

Luzan passed the distance with a time of 47.034 seconds. Canadian Laurence Vincent Lapointe took silver with a time of 46.786 seconds and American Nevin Harrison won gold finishing the race in 45.932 seconds.

“I dedicate this award to my mom, who dreamed that I’ll go to the Olympics and win a medal there. I did it, mom!” said Luzan.

Other than the two medals, Ukrainian Maryna Kylypko finished fifth in the women’s pole vault final taking 4.50 meters, while Olena Starikova came fourth in women’s keirin with a time losing 0.396 seconds.

Lyubov Basova came sixth in women’s keirin 0.580 seconds behind winner Shanne Braspennincx representing the Netherlands.

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics will run through Aug. 8. Ukrainian Suspilne Sport online media and UA:Pershyi television channel broadcast the event for free.
