The Ukrainian artistic swimming team has won bronze at the team free routine event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

This marks Ukraine’s second bronze medal in artistic swimming at the games. Ukraine now ranks as the third-highest performing nation in the sport, behind China and the Russian Olympic Committee.

The eight-strong team, composed of Vlada and Maryna Aleksiiva, Marta Fiedina, Kateryna Reznyk, Anastasia Savchuk, Alina Shynkarenko, Ksenia Sydorenko, and Elizabeth Yakhno, won out against Japan for the first time to take the bronze medal position.

The Ukrainian artistic swimming team made their first debut at the Olympic Games in 2016, finishing fourth behind Japan. The team qualified for the Olympics after finishing in the top two highest ranked teams not already qualified from the 2019 World Championships in Korea.

In their technical program on Aug. 6, the Ukrainian team took third place with a score of 94.2685, and later took third place again in the free program with 96.0333 points.

This is Ukraine’s 11th bronze medal at Tokyo and its 17th medal in total, meaning that Ukraine is now 15th in the Olympic rankings by number of medals.
