You're reading: Ukraine’s Kalinina loses to Stephens in tough match at US Open

Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina was defeated by United States player and defending champion Sloane Stephens in the second round at The US Open Tennis Championships on Aug. 29.

Stephens beat Kalinina with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. The match lasted 2 hours and 46 minutes.

Kalinina, 21, currently ranks 136th in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking.

Kalinina started the first confidently – leading 4-1. But Stephens began to fight back and made the score 4-4. The Ukrainian performed well on return points and broke her opponent’s serve in 9th game. The first set ended with a score of 6-4 in Kalinina’s favor.

In the second set, Stephens played aggressively, leading 3-0 with two breaks. Kalinina managed to get back in the game and change the score in the set to 4-3. The set ended with a score of 7-5 in Stephens favor.

In the third set, Stephens made an early break and then easily won every serve. Leading with a score of 4-2, she ended the last set with a score of 6-2 in her favor.

It was the first U.S. Open tournament for twenty-one year-old Kalinina.

Two leading Ukrainian tennis players, world No.7 Elina Svitolina and No.36 Lesia Tsurenko, continue on in the U.S. Open tournament.
