You're reading: Ukraine’s Svitolina loses to Bertens in semifinals in Cincinnati

Ukrainian women’s tennis star Elina Svitolina lost to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands in the semifinals of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati on Aug. 18.

Bertens beat Svitolina with a score of 6-4, 6-3. The match lasted 84 minutes.

Svitolina, 23, ranks 7th in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking.

The Ukrainian started the set very confidently, leading 4-1 in the match. Unfortunately, Svitolina repeats the failure of another Ukrainian tennis player that day – Lesia Tsurenko, going on to lose five games in a row. The set ended with a score of 6-4 in Berten’s favor.

The second set started evenly – both players held their serves, playing good tennis. In the fifth game, Bertens had three breakpoints to break Ukrainian’s serve. Svitolina tried to get back in the game, but Bertens didn’t allow the Ukrainian to regain her composure. The second set ended with a score of 6-3 in Bertens’ favor.
