You're reading: Ukrainian Stakhovsky wins first round at Wimbledon

Ukrainian tennis player Sergiy Stakhovsky won the first round at Wimbledon on July 2, defeating Portuguese João Sousa.

Stakhovsky, 32, triumphed over Sousa with a score of 6-3, 6-3, 5-7, 1-6, 6-4. The match lasted three hours and 29 minutes.

Stakhovsky ranks 109th in the Association of Tennis Professionals.

Stakhovsky started the first set confidently, winning his serves. He made a break in the sixth game, leading 4-2. The first set ended at 6-3 in the Ukrainian’s favor.

In the second set, players continued to serve well. Having no chance for a break, the two were on the way to a tie-break, but in the seventh game, Stakhovsky made one more break point. The second set ended at 6-3 in Stakhovsky’s favor.

In the third set, Sousa made an early break point, leading 1-3. In this set the players started to make mistakes, losing three serves in a row. Sousa won the last three games, winning the third set with a score of 5-7.

The worst set for the Ukrainian was the fourth one. Stakhovsky won his serve and then lost six games in a row. Sousa confidently won the fourth set with a score of 1-6. An early break by the Ukrainian allowed him to lead in the fifth set with a score of 3-1. Stakhovsky won all his serves, winning 6-4 in the final set.

Stakhovsky will next play at Wimbledon on July 4 against Sam Querrey of the U.S.
