You're reading: Ukrainian Tsurenko wins first round at US Open

Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko reached the second round match at the United States Open Tennis Championships, defeating Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck on Aug. 28.

Tsurenko, 29, beat Van Uytvanck with a score of 6-3, 6-2. The match lasted 75 minutes.

Tsurenko currently ranks 36th in the Women’s Tennis Association ranking.

The Ukrainian started the set very well – leading 5-1. Strong serve and active game on return points allowed her to win in spite of loosing one serve. Leading with a score of 5-3, Tsurenko won the first set with a score of 6-3 in her favor.

In the second set, Tsurenko continued to serve well and won the opponent’s serve. After five games, she lead 4-2. Tsurenko won the second set with a score of 6-2.

Tsurenko will go on to the second round of the U.S. Open, where she will face World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki.
