Ukrainian 20-year-old athlete Daria Bilodid won a bronze medal in women’s judo at the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo, Japan on July 24.

Bilodid is the first Ukrainian woman to win a medal at an Olympic judo event. It’s also Ukraine’s first medal at this year’s Olympics, which kicked off on July 23.

The athlete competed in the weight category of up to 48 kilograms, defeating Israel’s representative, Shira Richoni, in her fight for bronze.

In the semifinals, Bilodid lost to Japanese athlete Funi Tonak, despite having previously defeated her in the world championships in Baku in 2018 and in Tokyo in 2019.

Bilodid beat Milica Nikolić from Serbia in the round of 16 and Catarina Costa from Portugal in the quarterfinals.

Distria Krasniqi, a judoka from Kosovo, took the gold.

This was Bilodid’s first time competing in the Olympic Games.

She became the youngest judo world champion in Baku when she was 17.
