Before the World Cup, Russian President Vladimir Putin touted his country’s love for soccer. The World Cup, he said, would be a new chance for Russians to show off their country to the world. It would be a “celebration filled with sporting passion and strong emotions.”
The only problem: The country’s passion and emotions toward its own soccer team are usually expressed as unbridled pessimism.
