On February 21, native speakers all over the world mark the International Mother Language Day. It has been observed annually since 2000 – under UNESCO’s decision; it aims to promote peace and multilingualism around the world and to protect all mother languages.

It is observed on this particular date to recognize the 1952 Bengali Language Movement in Bangladesh; back then, the Pakistani government heavily oppressed the local students who stood for the right to speak their own mother language.
