You're reading: 13 new COVID-19 cases identified in Ukraine, total rises to 97

Thirteen new cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, have been identified in the western Chernivtsi Oblast on March 24, according to the oblast’s governor, Sergii Osachuk. The total number of cases in Ukraine now stands at 97.

Since the first case was identified in Chernivtsi on March 3, the number of infected in the region has surged to 38 people.

During a briefing on March 24, Ukraine’s chief sanitary doctor, Viktor Lyashko, said that the new patients had come into contact with citizens who were already infected.

He also emphasized the importance of people staying isolated during the quarantine to prevent the disease from spreading.

A day earlier, on March 23, the Ukrainian Center for Public Health registered 11 new cases in Kyiv Oblast, bringing the total in the oblast and the city of Kyiv to 44.

Since the beginning of the outbreak in Ukraine, three patients have died from COVID-19. One person has recovered and was discharged from the hospital.

Globally, there are 392,372 patients infected, with some 95% of them suffering from the mild form of the disease. More people have recovered (103,393) than died (17,147) from the pandemic.

Following the experience of other countries, the Ukrainian government imposed restrictive measures on citizens, shutting down public transportation, domestic travel, restaurants, businesses and other institutions.
