You're reading: Only 17 percent of Ukrainian army are conscripts

Some 36,700 people enrolled in the Ukrainian armed forces on a contract basis in 2017, bringing their total number to 168,000, the chief of the General Staff, Viktor Muzhenko, said.

“Last year, 36,700 people joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces on a contract basis. To date the army has over 168,000 people serving on a contract basis, including over 48,000 officers,” Muzhenko told the Reforms Committee at the Ukrainian Defense Ministry on January 23.

Currently, contract servicemen account for 83 percent of the whole army, conscripts 17 percent, and 140,000 are reservists, Muzhenko said.
