The coronavirus (COVID-19) disease was diagnosed based on the results of PCR tests on six Hasidic pilgrims who arrived in Uman, Cherkasy region before the ban on foreigners entering Ukraine was introduced, Uman Mayor Oleksandr Tsebriy has said.

“As far as I know to date, six pilgrims have tested positive for COVID-19, and therefore medical workers are already working according to their protocol,” Tsebriy said in his video message posted on the Pavlovsky News page on Facebook on Sept. 4.

According to the mayor, earlier he had reached an agreement on mandatory PCR testing of all pilgrims who arrived in Uman with the Chief Rabbi of Ukraine.

“There are a certain number of pilgrims who are on the territory of the town, who arrived there before August 28, when the final and only correct decision was made to ban foreigners from entering the ‘red zone,’ so these people, after carrying out the appropriate PCR tests […] are now being tested,” Tsebriy said.

As reported, Ukraine, at the request of the head of the Israeli government, made a decision, according to which the arrival of pilgrims to celebrate Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) in 2020 in Uman, Cherkasy region will be restricted.
