You're reading: Almost half of Ukrainians believe martial law introduced to delay presidential election

Most Ukrainians do not support the introduction of martial law in Ukraine and believe that such a step was necessary for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in order to postpone the date of the presidential election.

According to a survey conducted on December 1-10 by the Oleksandr Yaremenko Ukrainian Institute of Social Research and the Social Monitoring Center, 64.5 percent of respondents do not support the imposition of martial law. At the same time, almost a quarter (24.9 percent) of Ukrainians support such the decision and 10.2 percent were undecided.

At the same time, 56.6 percent of respondents believe that, by imposing martial law, Poroshenko wanted to postpone the date of the presidential election. While 22.2 percent of Ukrainians believe that in this way the president took care of the security of the country.

In the course of the study, 2,198 respondents in all regions, except for in temporarily occupied territories, were interviewed using a personal formalized interview. The margin of error of poll results is less than 2.1 percent.
