You're reading: Armed Russian mercenary surrender to Ukrainian military

On Sept. 28, an armed militant from Luhansk region voluntarily surrendered to the Ukrainian military, the press center of the Joint Forces Operation (JFO) said.

It is said that the 23-year-old junior sergeant served in the 6th separate motorized rifle regiment, which is based in occupied Kadyivka, as a driver. He joined the Russia-led forces back in 2016, where he was brought by his own father, who served in a neighboring unit. He was promised a high salary and given a weapon.

According to the detainee, during the service, he first tried drugs, which his colleagues treated him. Gradually he became addicted to drugs. He also said that the use of drugs and alcohol in the ranks of the Russian occupation forces is quite common.

According to the man, the concept of discipline in the ranks of Russia-led forces is completely absent.

“Unable to withstand the bullying and constant humiliation, both from the Russian curators and from his colleagues, he decided to move voluntarily to the territory controlled by Ukraine,” the JFO said.

Now investigators are working with the detainee. The headquarters recalled that, according to Part 6 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the State guarantees release from liability to those persons who did not commit serious crimes against people, voluntarily left the ranks of illegal armed groups and reported this to law enforcement officers.
