In a twist straight out of a spy thriller, Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko showed up at a news conference in Kyiv on May 30— a day after he was reportedly shot dead in the Ukrainian capital. Babchenko explained that his death had been faked as part of sting by Ukrainian security services to catch his would-be assassin.

It’s an astonishing saga, but not the first time people under stress or duress have gone to the extreme of faking their own deaths.
