Leaders of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry understand that the liberation of the temporarily occupied territory of Donbas will be a police operation involving the peacekeeping forces, and units of the National Police and the National Guard are preparing for this development, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has said.

“Today we are considering several possible options for the development of the scenario in the east. We understand that the liberation of the territory of Donbas and the restoration of control over the eastern border will be a police operation involving the peacekeeping forces, not the military. Interior Ministry forces – the police and the guard – are preparing for this development,” the press service of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine quoted Avakov as saying on Facebook.

At the same time, Avakov said on Twitter that he had had a meeting on Friday with the delegation of the American Foreign Policy Council (AFPC), an analytical center under the U.S. Congress, during which “the state and prospects of Ukraine in conditions of military Russia’s aggression, the effectiveness of international sanctions and cooperation in the field of security were frankly discussed.”

According to the press service of the ministry, representatives of the American side noted the dynamics of the process of reforming the civil security sector of Ukraine. However, there remains the need for further consistent changes in the way of combating corruption.

We need to get rid of corruption in order to promote reforms. We see a lot of effort on your part in this regard. And I want to tell you that Washington is well aware of this, said William Schneider Jr., head of the delegation of the AFPC.

At the end of the meeting, Avakov expressed gratitude to the U.S. government for a clear position in counteracting Russian aggression.

“We understand that some European companies are cooperating with the Russian Federation, despite the official position of Brussels: America has a very clear position on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and supports Ukraine,” he said.
