Ukraine will regain control of Donbas within the next two years, and preparations for this process are currently under way, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

Avakov hosted an expanded meeting of the Ukrainian National Guard’s military council, attended, among others, by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, the Interior Ministry press service reported on Nov. 25.

“I am convinced that we will carry out Donbas’s de-occupation within the next two years. And the National Guard plays a critical role in this. All that we are doing now is aimed at getting prepared for this process. Therefore, the military component should be better prepared, as well as the law enforcement component,” Avakov said.

Turchynov said in addressing the meeting participants that the National Guard was set up as highly-mobile and professionally acting multitask force capable of working efficiently both in a modern frontline battle and in the rear. “And I am delighted to acknowledge that the Ukrainian National Guard has become precisely this,” he said.
