You're reading: Belarus lifts entry ban for Ukrainian writer Zhadan

After the intervention of Ukrainian diplomats and politicians, as well as Belarusian writers, Minsk has canceled entry ban for Ukrainian writer Serhiy Zhadan.

“Friends, the crusade has been canceled! Common sense and a sense of dignity win over everything that is written in Putin’s press guidance. I am very pleased that I will be able to visit Belarus and deepen Ukrainian-Belarusian cultural ties,” Zhadan wrote on his Facebook page on Feb. 11 evening.

The writer also thanked the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and personally Minister Pavlo Klimkin for their efficiency and persistence.

“See you at a concert in Minsk in May. Glory to Ukraine! Long live Belarus!” Zhadan wrote.

As reported, late on Feb. 11 Belarusian police detained Ukrainian writer, poet and volunteer Serhiy Zhadan in a hotel in Minsk and kept at the police station until the morning. Zhadan then was notified that he was banned from entering Belarus explaining this move by the fact that in 2015 the writer was banned from entering Russia for his alleged involvement in terrorist activities.
