You're reading: Belarusian foreign minister says Kerch incident leads to full-scale conflict

MINSK – The incident in the Kerch Strait has become the “redline”, beyond which a full-scale military conflict could have started, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said.

“Following the incident in the Kerch Strait we approached an extremely dangerous line, that is, a full-scale conflict. It is a ‘redline’. ‘A point of no return’ is beyond it. We know perfectly well in history that this sort of incidents led to world wars in the past,” Makei said at a meeting of the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers in Milan.

The settlement of the Ukrainian crisis is a pivotal issue of security in Europe, the minister said. “Some are even saying that Donbas is a political issue in Europe. Unfortunately, recent events cause us a serious concern,” he said.

Belarus will continue to make a great effort to facilitate the settlement of this crisis, in particular providing a venue for the Trilateral Contact Group talks in Minsk, Makei said. “We are ready to constructively join all serious scenarios of settling this conflict,” the foreign minister added.
