Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov believes that the bill on criminal liability for fake information can be adopted only after extensive discussion, so as not to cross the line, violating the rights and freedoms of citizens.
Bakanov said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine that no one turned to the SBU for help in preparing this bill.
“If we talk about whether such a law is needed, then it seems to me that it should be considered just taking into account possible information threats. I think that the world will move in this direction,” said the head of the Ukrainian intelligence service.
On the other hand, according to the head of the SBU, “it is necessary to work with the text to understand whether this infringes on the rights and freedoms of citizens, where this fine line will be.”
“We do realize that even the word “yes” has at least 15 semantic nuances that will depend on the context. Therefore, the issue needs to be worked out, involving the society in the discussion. And only after a comprehensive discussion can such a law be adopted,” Bakanov said.
