You're reading: Brother of Kyrgyzstan’s president-elect becomes ambassador to Ukraine

BISHKEK – Zhusupbek Sharipov, the older brother of Kyrgyzstan’s president-elect, who previously headed the country’s diplomatic mission to Kuwait, has been appointed ambassador to Ukraine.

President Almazbek Atambayev has signed a decree appointing Sharipov Kyrgyzstan’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in Kyiv, the presidential press service told Interfax on Nov. 16.

Atambayev also issued a decree relieving Sharipov of his duties as Kyrgyzstan’s ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Kuwait, Morocco, Jordan, and Bahrain.

Zhusupbek Sharipov is the older brother of Kyrgyzstan’s President-Elect Sooronbai Jeenbekov. Sharipov has been in diplomatic service since the mid-2000s; he has worked in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and became head of the Kyrgyz embassy to Kuwait in 2015.

Kyrgyzstan’s President-Elect Sooronbai Jeenbekov will take office on Nov. 24.
