The Sea Bird vessel, en route from Ukraine to Tunisia with 7,000 tonnes of wheat on board, sank early Saturday morning, Aug. 28, in the Cretan Sea east of the Peloponnese (Greece), all 16 Syrian crew members during a large search and rescue the operations were saved, the Maritime Bulletin publication has said.
“The ship sank after the collision. More details are not provided, but judging by the positions of the vessels and trajectories in the area, the Sea Bird probably collided with the general cargo ship Haya, which as of 06:20 UTC on Aug. 28 is drifting north of the estimated the place of the collision,” the publication said.
According to Maritime Bulletin, it is likely that the Haya Lebanese ship also participated in the search and rescue operation. According to it, the last signal Sea Bird filed at 00:20 UTC.
“General cargo ship Sea Bird, IMO 8202941, DWT 7650, built in 1985, flag of Togo, manager GMZ Ship Management CO SA, Lebanon (EQUASIS),” the publication said.
