Local elections in ten Ukrainian regions will be held after martial law ends, according to Ukrainian Central Elections Commission Secretary Natalia Bernatska.

“Elections are taking places in all regions but the ten where martial law has been declared. (…) We have insisted on carrying out the election process from A to Z. I am confident that the election in ten regions where martial law is in effect will be scheduled after martial law ends. These elections will be held,” Bernatska told the press after a press conference at Interfax on Thursday.

It is not possible to hold the elections in those ten regions on December 23, she said.

“The thing is that the election is not just voting day, but also the electoral process, which lasts a long time, and every date is designated for particular procedures. If a week or two are lost, (election results) may be called into question,” Bernatska said.

Martial law was declared in ten regions of Ukraine along the borders with Russia and Transdniestria and the Black Sea coast for the period from November 26 to December 26.
