Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States Valeriy Chaly has held meetings with senators from Nebraska and California Benjamin Sasse and Dianne Feinstein (Democratic Party), during which he called to support the adoption by the U.S. Senate of legislative decisions aimed at helping Ukraine.

During the meeting with Sasse, Chaly briefed the senator with the current situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea, the press service of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine reported on July 26 night.

“Ambassador Chaly asked Senator Sasse as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee to support legislation aimed to further expand the U.S. defense and security assistance to Ukraine. Particular emphasize was placed on the importance of providing Ukraine with U.S. lethal weapons of a defensive nature that could become an effective deterrent against further escalation of Russian aggression,” a message says.

During the meeting with Feinstein, the Ukrainian ambassador discussed the priorities of assistance to Ukraine from the U.S. Congress in the context of the formation of expenditure items of the U.S. budget for 2018.

“Ambassador Chaly thanked Senator Feinstein for her steadfast support of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression asking her to support, in her capacity as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, the legislative initiatives aimed at further U.S. assistance to Ukraine – in areas of defense and security in particular. The Senator has assured the Ambassador that she will continue to support Ukraine,” the message says.

The sides also discussed as a number of other matters, including the importance of putting in place an enhanced sanctions legislation on Russia.
