State-owned enterprise Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) wants to launch a liquid radioactive waste treatment plant in December 2017, the press service of the State Agency for Exclusion Zone Management has reported.

Combined active tests at the plant were conducted in 2014, while Chornobyl NPP has not yet received the certificate from the State Construction and Architectural Inspectorate.

“Additional works are to be carried out to receive the certificate, as new construction rules have been introduced in Ukraine, in particular, reconstruct the fire anti-lightning prevention systems and external insulation of the building,” the press service said.

The contract to carry out the required works was signed on August 7. The works will be finished in two stages (the first one until the end of 2017 and the second one – until May 2018).

The annual projected capacity of the plant is at least 2,500 cubic meters of waste.

Now liquid radioactive waste in the amount of over 20,000 cubic meters has been accumulated at the industrial site of Chornobyl NPP. After being treated the waste will be sent for storage in the Vector complex.
