Mast-Bud LLC on May 7, 2018 after a four-year break resumed works to build a breakwater pier under the project on construction of the first stage (hydro-technical utilities) of the container terminal at the Quarantine Mole of the Odesa maritime merchandise port thanks to the artificially created territory.
According to a press release of the subsidiary Container Terminal Odesa (CTO) of Germany’s HHLA International GmbH, starting from 2010 the Odesa seaport (today it is the branch of the Ukrainian Sea Port Authority) jointly with CTO has been implementing the investment project entitled “The Container Terminal at the Quarantine Mole with an Annual Capacity of at least 600,000 TEU” under the general investment agreement signed. The project is intended to attract additional investment for the further development of the port’s infrastructure, increase efficiency of cargo and container handling, boost cargo flow and improve the quality of services.
Some of the works are carried out by the investor (CTO): the creation of a warehouse area, construction of coast-protecting units that connect new berth structures in the north with the existing breakwater pier and with the operating terminal in the south, purchase of transshipping equipment. Some of the works are done by the Ukrainian Sea Port Authority: dredging works near the Quarantine Harbor, construction of a breakwater pier and berth hydro-technical utilities.
The total cost of construction is Hr6.426 billion, including Hr 3.651 billion of the Ukrainian Sea Port Authority and Hr 2.775 billion of CTO.
“It was a priority for us to “unfreeze” this long-term construction project in the port area. The process was started. In addition, a meeting was held with the representatives of the German bank KfW, whose goal was to confirm the interest of the parties in allocating funding for the completion of the project. This is about EUR 60 million required for completion construction of a breakwater pier and carrying out the necessary dredging works in the port water area near the new container terminal,” Head of Ukrainian Sea Port Authority Raivis Veckagans said.
CTO general director Anastas Kokkin said that the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany is considering the possibility of financing the construction of a breakwater pier by the Federal Government through allocating loans from the German state bank KfW (Frankfurt am Main).
“In the first four months of 2018, the increase in freight traffic was more than 11 percent compared to the same period in 2017,” he said.
