You're reading: Court arrests 2 doctors from Cancer Institute with option of Hr 160,000 bail

Court has arrested the head of the polyclinic department and the cancer doctor of the National Cancer Institute (Kyiv), who recently were served with notices of suspicion for demanding money from patients for medicines issued free of charge, with an option of a bail.

“The court arrested the suspects with a bail option in the amount of Hr 160,560 each,” the public relations department of the Kyiv police said on Wednesday.

On August 16, during investigative activities at the National Cancer Institute, law enforcement officers documented the extortion and the receipt of undue benefits from citizens who are being treated for cancer, as well as from business entities for winning tenders to procure medicines for the needs of the Cancer Institute, by two doctors.

During the authorized raids in the premises of the Cancer Institute and at the place of residence of the defendants, documentation was seized confirming the involvement of the doctors in illegal activities.

On September 17, the Kyiv city prosecutor’s office served notices of suspicion to the head of the outpatient department of the National Cancer Institute and the oncologist.

The suspects are charged with committing criminal offenses under Part 1 of Article 184 (violation of the right to free medical assistance) and Part 3 of Article 189 (extortion via abuse of power by officials committed repeatedly) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
