The Kyiv Court of Appeal on Sept. 23 continued hearings on the appeal of the sentence of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych for state treason.

At a meeting on Sept. 23, the defense filed a number of motions, some of which the court will consider later, in particular, on the interrogation of witnesses to the events of Feb. 20, 2014, regarding the mass shooting on Independence Square in Kyiv.

During the day, arguments were heard from Yanukovych’s lawyers against the verdict of the Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv, which the defense considers illegal and unreasonable

Prosecutors argue that enough evidence was gathered of the ex-president’s guilt.

As reported, on Jan. 24, the Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv sentenced Yanukovych to 13 years in prison for treason and aiding the Russian Federation in waging an aggressive war against Ukraine. At the same time, the court found Yanukovych not guilty on charges of complicity in the encroachment on the territorial integrity of Ukraine, which led to deaths or other grave consequences.
