You're reading: COVID-19 in Ukraine: 753 new cases, 880 dead, 30,506 infected

The number of COVID-19 cases in Ukraine is rising. The last 24 hours saw a record 753 new confirmed cases, bringing the total up to 30,506, Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said at a morning press briefing on June 13.

10 people have died from coronavirus during the last 24 hours. The death toll is now 880.

No children are among the newly infected. However, the number does include 124 doctors, who caught the virus at work. The number of new infections recorded as of the morning of June 13 is remarkably high compared to the previous day’s record of 683 cases.

Stepanov believes the infection spike can be explained by the failure of Ukrainians to obey the quarantine restrictions after they were relaxed.

“Easing quarantine restrictions is not canceling them,” Stepanov said. “The fact that we stopped following the rules is what made these statistics as they are right now.”

“The virus is not choosy with respect to region, sex or age,” he said emphasizing that new restrictions will be imposed if the situation does not improve.

Stepanov also said that testing is accelerating, with 18,247 tests conducted in the past 24 hours. Still, this is fewer than the 20,173 tests reported the day before.

The most recent figure includes 10,896 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 7,351 antibody tests (IFA).

Stepanov also announced that the State Commission on Technogenic and Ecological Safety and Emergencies will start inspecting the regions in order to better understand the geographic spread of the virus and react accordingly.

The biggest numbers of new cases in the past 24 hours were recorded in Lviv, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Kyiv Oblasts.

Mandatory 14-days-long observation has been canceled for people arriving from the occupied territories of Donbas and Crimea, Stepanov said.

However, Russia-backed authorities of the occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions rejected calls to open the borders. Ukraine plans to open the border with Crimea on June 15, according to the government.
