You're reading: Crimean authorities plan to black out Ukrainian broadcasting on peninsula

Officials of the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia on Dec. 3 protested against the construction of the TV tower in the south of the Kherson region, and said they have a hardware for blocking Ukrainian broadcasting on the peninsula.

“Ukrainian broadcasting on the territory of the Crimea will be terminated … Russia in Crimea has sufficient technical means to black out the broadcasting banned by the Russian legislation,” minister of internal policy, information and communication of the Crimean government Dmitry Polonsky said.

A different view was expressed by a member of the Ukrainian National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting Serhiy Kostynsky. He claims that the Crimean authorities do not have sufficient equipment and telecommunications infrastructure, especially for blacking out TV and radio signals.

“The issue of electricity arises … if they try to do so, then they will use the scarce resource,” Kostynsky said.

As reported, the construction of 150 meter high telecommunications tower was started near the Chonhar checkpoint in the Kherson region on Dec. 2 for broadcasting four Ukrainian channels to the Crimean peninsula occupied by Russia.
