You're reading: Police officer shot in the head in Kharkiv in serious condition

KHARKIV – An officer of the Criminal Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine, who was shot in the head in an attack by two unidentified persons in Kharkiv on Jan. 16 morning, is in serious condition, Deputy Chief Medical Officer of the city’s hospital of emergency aid Andriy Kozachenko has said.

“He is on artificial ventilation of the lungs, so he is unconscious… These are serious injuries. These are injuries that can be fatal,” Kozachenko told journalists.

According to him, the doctors have not finished surgery of the policeman.

“It’s already taken about two hours and I think it will last for the same time… Neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons and general surgeons have completed their part. Another stage of the surgery is underway,” Kozachenko said.

On Jan. 16 morning, two unidentified persons wearing masks attacked a law-enforcement officer on Krasnodarskaya Street in Kharkiv, they fired several shots at his head, he had head and neck wounds.

Chief of the Main Department of the National Police in Kharkiv region Oleh Bekh said that the attackers had fled in a dark blue Daewoo Lanos car in an unknown direction.

Criminal proceedings were opened on this fact under Article 348 (endangering life of a law enforcement officer, a member of a public formation for the protection of public order and the state border, or a serviceman). An interception plan was introduced in the city of Kharkiv and Kharkiv region.

First Deputy Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Viacheslav Abroskin said that law enforcement authorities had identified the person who ordered the contract hit.
