  • It is confirmed: Ukraine will hold a snap parliamentary election on July 21. The election is to be held by an old and widely criticized electoral system which allows for corruption and vote buying.
  • Meanwhile, a poll shows that as of now, only four parties can get more than 5 percent in the election and make it into parliament.
  • Ukrainian politicians and tech people seem to barely understand each other, newly elected President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on May 23 during a 20-minute speech at Kyiv’s annual tech conference iForum. “Innovation and politics are two different worlds in Ukraine,” the president said.
  • PrivatBank on May 21 filed a new lawsuit against its former owner Ihor Kolomoisky in the Delaware Chancery Court in the U.S. According to a copy of the complaint obtained by the Kyiv Post, PrivatBank is suing Kolomoisky, oligarch Gennadiy Bogolyubov and multiple business associates for stealing money from the bank – Ukraine’s largest lender – before laundering and parking the money in U.S. commercial real estate.
  • The 8th Sweden-Ukraine Business forum, one of the largest business events of the year, was held in Kyiv on May 23. Swedish and Ukrainian experts, as well as officials and business representatives, discussed vital topics for the Ukrainian economy such as sustainable development, decentralization and digital transformation opportunities for cities.
  • Alyona Alyona, a 27-year-old Ukrainian rapper, continues to generate buzz in American media. Just over one month after she was profiled by U.S. Vogue, the musician has been featured in the New York Times, as part of a story on Europe’s 15 “most important acts, musically and socially, right now.”
